The full answer
This page covers raw or undercooked meat. PetMD advises against feeding raw meat because of the risk of food poisoning, and ASPCA lists raw meat among foods to avoid.
Cornell University's veterinary college and the U.S. FDA describe how raw meat can carry bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. Dogs can carry and shed these bacteria even when they look healthy.
That risk extends to people who handle the food or live with the dog, especially young children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system.
Bones are a separate topic and are not covered here. Plain fully cooked meat is covered on the individual meat pages.
