One ingredient, one long bake. These chewy sweet potato slices need nothing else, which makes them one of the simplest homemade treats to control.

Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Makes About 15 chews · 3 hours 10 minutes total

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, washed

Instructions

  1. 1Heat the oven to 120°C / 250°F and line two baking trays.
  2. 2Scrub the sweet potatoes well. Peeling is optional.
  3. 3Slice lengthways into strips about 0.5 cm thick — thicker slices stay chewier.
  4. 4Arrange in a single layer without overlapping.
  5. 5Bake for about 3 hours, turning every hour, until leathery but still flexible.
  6. 6Cool completely. They should bend rather than snap.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Because these are dehydrated rather than fully dried, refrigeration is safer than a room-temperature jar.

Serving considerations

  • Always supervise chews, and take away any piece small enough to swallow whole.
  • Sweet potato is calorie-dense compared with a leafy vegetable, so count chews as treats.
  • Ask your vet before adding regular chews if your dog is on a weight or prescription diet.
